Included with SALT Bilingual SE

  • The Bilingual SE software with the Bilingual Spanish/English Story Retell reference databases.
  • The wordless picture book entitled "Frog, Where Are You?" by Mercer Meyer (1969) which is used to elicit the samples.
  • The SALT manual with case studies and step-by-step instructions for eliciting, transcribing, and analyzing language samples.

The Task

This is a story retell task which requires the child to listen to a story while observing the story's picture sequence, and then retell the same story. This task is repeated for both Spanish and English to provide the opportunity for direct comparison of language proficiency. This narrative task provides the child with optimum support to retell the story in each language - with an audio model provided by the examiner and the visual support of the story book.

How long does it take?

The time needed for this task varies from child to child. All times listed are estimates.

  • Administration - The task is administered twice – once for Spanish and once for English. Each task takes approximately 20 minutes to administer.
  • Transcription - Each task results in an audio file, approximately 3-5 minutes in length. Each audio file takes approximately an hour to transcribe. Those familiar with the SALT transcript-entry conventions can significantly reduce the transcription time.
  • Analysis - It takes about 5 minutes to generate and print the standard set of analyses using the SALT Bilingual SE software.

Evaluation

The Bilingual SE software includes the Bilingual Spanish/English Story Retell reference databases. These databases consist of Spanish and English story-retell narratives from over 2,000 native Spanish-speaking bilingual children enrolled in transitional educational programs in urban Texas (Houston and Austin), border Texas (Brownsville), and urban California (Los Angeles). The children were in grades K-3, ranging in age from 5;0 through 9;9. Using the SALT software, the child's language samples may be compared to age or grade-matched peers selected from these reference databases. Measures such as mean length of utterance and number of different words are listed for the child along with summary statistics calculated from the selected database samples.
