SALT Transcript Conventions

This section of SALT training covers the conventions that SALT uses when transcribing language samples.

Transcript Conventions is comprised of six parts:

  1. Begin a New Transcript: Discusses how to begin a new transcript - identifying the speakers, the sampling context, and initializing the clock.


  2. Conventions Part 1: Describes the basic conventions that SALT uses when transcribing language samples. Utterance format, word segmentation, utterance segmentation, and ending punctuation will all be discussed.


  3. Conventions Part 2: Covers bound morphemes, unintelligible segments, idiosyncratic forms, and spelling conventions.


  4. Conventions Part 3: Covers mazes and part words, parenthetical remarks, overlapping speech, gestures and nonverbal turns, and transcriber comments.


  5. Conventions Part 4: Discusses pauses and elapsed time, omissions, codes, and root identification.


  6. Transcription Errors: Illustrates checking for errors in the format of the transcript.
