Transcription Practice

There are ten short audio samples for you to use as practice. These samples are in order from easiest to most difficult. You should 1) download the audio files one at a time below or download all 10 audio samples at once (view download directions), 2) transcribe them using the SALT editor and some playback system, and 3) compare your transcripts with the "master" transcripts.

    This is an excerpt from Albany retelling the story A Porcupine Named Fluffy, by Helen Lester (1986). Notice the prevalence of mazing in her language sample.

    This conversational sample is between Kenny and an examiner while looking at Kenny's family pictures. Notice there's some overlapping speech in this sample.

    This conversational sample is between Cyanna and an examiner. Notice that Cyanna uses African American English dialect and has difficulty with word finding and mazing.

    This is an excerpt from Rosa retelling the story Frog, Where are You?, by Mercer Mayer (1969). Rosa is an English Language Learner and is enrolled in ESL curriculum. Notice the errors at the word and utterance level as well as pause times between utterances.
