Setting up a Spanish SALT Document

The procedure is the same as setting up a document for English transcription.

  • Open SALT.
  • Click on the File Menu, and choose "New".
  • Select "Spanish" as the language.
  • Enter the other Header Information.
  • Click Ok. Header Information will be displayed on the new blank SALT document, and you are ready to begin entering the transcript.

Language Setting
The current language is displayed at the right-hand side of the status bar at the bottom of the main window and may vary from transcript to transcript. Special characters, such as ñ and é, are accepted regardless of the language setting. The language setting affects only five parts of the SALT program: 1) the contents of the standard word lists (note that the standard word lists include the "Yes/No Words" used to determine the yes/no responses to questions, and the "Filled Pause Words" used to determine the contents of mazes); 2) the automatic identification of word roots if root identification files are used; 3) the availability of the "Bound Clitic Tables" option in the Analyze menu; 4) the date format; and 5) the report labels.

The current language may be determined two ways:

First choice: from the +Language entry in the current transcript. The following two conditions must be true: 1) the "Get current language from transcript plus line" option is checked in the language settings option selected from the Setup menu, and 2) the current transcript contains a +Language plus line with one of the language labels. The following plus line:

+ Language: Spanish

would set the language to Spanish.

Second choice: from the Language Settings option in the Setup menu. There are three language settings: English, Spanish and Other. You have the option of selecting one or more of these languages. To force the current language to be specified by the languages selected here, uncheck the box labeled "Get current language from transcript plus line".
