Things to notice:

  • (um) is a filled pause and is marked as a maze with a single set of parentheses.
  • ((How long do we have to talk for)) is a parenthetical remark which occurred in the middle of the utterance. It is enclosed within a double set of parentheses to differentiate it from a maze.
  • < > and <Ten minute/s> is an example of an empty overlap. The examiner's response occurs in the middle of the child's utterance but does not overlap with any of her words. Empty brackets are used to indicate the location of the overlap in the child's utterance. The examiner's utterance is also enclosed in brackets.
