I am hoping to use SALT for my current research project, which involves the transcription and coding of focus group interviews. Do you know of a way to use SALT with more than two speakers?

SALT will work with any number of speakers. You just need to specify the speakers in the $ speaker line at the beginning of the transcript. The $ speaker line is divided into 3 areas: 1st speaker (group), 2nd speaker (group), and ignore. Analyses are based on the 1st speaker (group) and 2nd speaker (group). The 3rd area, ignore, are ignored for analysis except for turn taking and rate calculations. You can change the $ speaker line to determine which speakers are being analyzed. If you have access to SALT, look at the help topic "Speaker Line $". You might also look at Course 1302 in the “Training & CEUs” section on the SALT web site.

SALT does not match up the overlapping segments between speakers. The only analysis of overlapping speech is the number and percent of utterances containing overlapping speech for each speaker. So if you have 3 speakers overlapping simultaneously, you would insert the overlap symbols on the utterance of each speaker, e.g.,
C What/’s in <that box>?
M <See>^
E <There/’s a> surprise in there.
