Spanish Transcription Questions

    I am wondering the best way to transcribe the following interaction. The child asked me for a word, which I did not provide, and then remembered it on his own. I'd like to avoid coding the first part as an incomplete utterance, since it was completed later, and it has some useful information for the analysis.


    Child: Y el mesero les puso su carro en el... ¿dónde? Examiner: No sé. Child: En el parqueadero.

    English (my translation):

    Child: And the waiter put their car in the... where? Examiner: I don't know. Child: In the parking lot.

  • Bound morphemes combined, error in total in SALT


    I found that in "house/s/z", SALT total morphemes is 3 instead of 2. Because the program adds 1 per "/s", 1 per "/z" and 1 per "/s/z". This overinflates MLU (in morphemes). The same happens in Spanish when we try to add "/a" morpheme to mark feminine, before adding "/s".

    Would it be able to solve this problem? I don't know if there any reason because is in this way. I guess a rule which excludes any combination of more than one morpheme in the total account would be very useful.

  • Language/code switch

    Does the language switch to Spanish, English, or Combined only affect the word lists? If a speaker only says 1 or 2 words in English throughout the entire transcript, should the "Combined" language setting still be used? What impact does this have?

  • Linking verbs

    Do you link verbs to their following preposition? A huge one that always came up was, "ir a". Should it be transcribed as "ir_a"? What about other verbs that typically are followed by a preposition?

  • Clitic confusion

    Do you use + with reflexives or not? There was an example on the clitics help section, "El se para", which suggested that a clitic + should be used... but other examples on other sections suggested that reflexives only receive the [X] code. For example, on the Reflexive/non-reflexive pronouns page, "Raul se[X] fue con la food."

  • Phrase coding

    Should a phrase like "yo me voy" be coded with the verb "ir" or the reflexive "irse"? Should it be "yo me voy|ir" or "yo me voy|irse"?

  • Omission vs Word-level Error in Spanish for del & al

    "Fueron el parque."
    I'm not sure whether to code this as an omission "fueron *a el parque", although a +el should be combined to form "al" or as a word level error "fueron el[EW:al] parque"
    I have across this issue for the word "del" too. "La rana es de niño"
    Should it be: 
    "La rana es de[EW:del] niño"
    "La rana es de *el niño"
    Other example in which extra errors have to be coded: 
    miró) miró|mirar atrás (de) de[EW:del] los[EW] tronco||/s[EW:tronco].
    miró) miró|mirar atrás (de) de los[EW:el] tronco||/s[EW:tronco].
    Also in Spanish since gender and number noun/adjective agreement is important, it seems like I am coding for errors that the child did not necessarily make.
    For instance:  El niño vio la gallina 
    gender/number agreement is correct but if I were to change "gallina" to "búho" I would be coding two errors
    El niño vio la[EW:el] gallina[EW:búho]
  • Coding verb agreement errors

    Can we use the /* convention for Spanish verb conjugation errors? For example, a child who uses the third person singular as a default might say, "El niño y perro buscaba por todas partes." Could I transcribe it, "El niño y el perro buscaba/*n por todas partes," or is my only option to use the EW code and transcribe it as "El niño y el perro buscaba[EW:buscaban] por todas partes."? The error seems akin to the English example "go/*3s," but I believe that "n" is not a morpheme.
